When starting Savannah Friedkin, our goal was to create beautiful pieces that reflected a woman’s story while also building an environmentally conscious, and transparent fine jewelry brand from the ground up. At the core of this concept was to focus in on lab-grown diamonds and recycled precious metals given the numerous environmental and human rights issues surrounding the mining industry.
As part of this journey, our team traveled to the source of where our jewelry and lab-grown diamonds are created. It’s truly a remarkable process as technology expedites a multi billion year process into just about 22 days.
The Steps
At Savannah Friedkin, we proudly use Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) to create our stunning lab-grown diamonds. These diamonds hold the same chemical and crystal structure as mined diamonds, but do so in a more controlled, ethical, and transparent manner. What separates our lab grown diamonds from others is our focus on growing ours in an eco-friendly way that leads to beautiful, climate neutral diamonds. While this may sound quite technical, the process is actually pretty straightforward.
- The Seed: Where It All Begins Just like planting a tree, growing a diamond starts with a small slice of an existing diamond, known as a “seed.” This tiny piece serves as the foundation for the new diamond to grow. The seed is placed inside a vacuum chamber, and the CVD process begins.
-
Creating Carbon Vapor: The Magic Happens
Once inside the chamber, a mixture of gases (primarily methane and hydrogen) is introduced. These gases are heated to incredibly high temperatures, breaking down into carbon and hydrogen molecules. -
Growing a Diamond: Layer by Layer
The carbon atoms are released and begin to settle on the seed, gradually forming layer upon layer of crystalline diamond. Over time, these layers grow until the diamond reaches the desired size. -
Finishing Touches: Crafting Perfection
Once the diamond has grown to the desired size, it’s removed from the vacuum chamber. From here, skilled craftsmen cut, polish, and ensure the diamond meets our rigorous quality standards. Having seen them work first hand, these experienced individuals are truly artists.
Why Choose Lab-Grown Diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds offer several key advantages. Not only are they chemically and physically identical to natural diamonds, but they’re also created in a controlled environment, making them more affordable. Even more importantly, they’re an ethical choice, sidestepping the environmental and social challenges linked to traditional diamond mining.
At Savannah Friedkin, we take this one step further by only working with suppliers who are equally committed to sustainability. In order to create certified carbon -neutral diamonds, they have invested significant resources into renewable energy while also supporting the local communities in transitioning out of carbon based power sources. This means our lab-grown diamonds aren’t just beautiful; they’re also crafted with care for the planet and its people.
Lab grown diamonds blend cutting-edge technology with environmental responsibility. With their increasing popularity, sustainable diamonds are proving that ethical luxury, can be for everyone.
